Michael Jackson has never been bigger – from Daft Punk to Mark Ronson, he’s influencing everyone – and Donald Glover, the man behind Childish Gambino, is wearing his MJ influences on his sleeve in Kauai. From the off, this EP offers a snapshot of pop in 2014. Opener ‘Sober’ is a slow groove number that could be lifted from ‘Off The Wall’ minus the Kanye bass drop two-thirds of the way through. Second track ‘Pop Thieves (Make It Feel Good)’ is a much weaker, clichéd pop number that doesn’t have the appeal of the previous track or follow up ‘Retro [Rough]’, a smooth rap-soul track that matches the feel of ‘Sober’ with added textures. Track four continues with sunny-beach vibes in a hugely Neptunes influenced manner; it sounds like it could have been lifted straight from ‘Seeing Sounds’. Unfortunately, the story telling ‘Late Night in Kauai’ lets down the side, being a long winded piece that continue’s the story of ‘the kid’ from because the internet but doesn’t have the intricacy of the other tracks. Redemption is found, however, in the fantastic ‘3005’ remix that takes you back to the beach that Gambino built.

EP is the first extended play by American rapper Donald Glover under the name Childish Gambino. It was released for free digital download on March 8, 2011. It includes five songs produced by Gambino and Ludwig Göransson. EP preceded the release of Gambino's debut album, Camp (2011), which was released eight months later. On February 2, 2018, nearly 7 years later, the project was re-released for commercial consumption.[3]
